Did you make friendship bracelets when you were a kid? I did. Thread bracelets are fun and quick to make and they are perfect for using your left over thread from other projects. It’s also a very summery craft, fresh and colorful, ideal if you miss touching your yarns during the hottest months of the year.
So, the other day, I was revisiting this book that I love, which has a lot of curious and practical information like how to press flowers or how to do palm reading:
And, of course, there is a pair of pages on friendship bracelets.
Let me show you how to make these 2, plus 2 more that are also very easy.
The Chinese Staircase / aka Serpiente al rededor de un palo
In my opinion, this is the easiest of them all. It’s basically knots all around the rest of the threads. Here I leave you a video tutorial from Howcast.
The Candy Stripe / aka Cinta de caramelo
This one is very easy too. There are lots of tutorials on how to make it, but I’d recommend this one by Masha Knots.
Video is in Russian, but it has English subtitles.
Macrame Square Knot
Macrame is a craft that uses knots for decoration purposes. It’s commonly used in plant pot hangers and wall decorations. There are many types of knots, and the square knot is one of the basic ones. My mom taught me how to make this bracelet many years ago. ❤
In this video tutorial by Crafty Owl Cafe you can see how it works, plus some cool ideas on how to end the bracelet and make it adjustable.
Chevron bracelet
(right picture is a little blurry, sorry)
This is a variation of the candy stripe and it’s easier than it looks. It uses two knots but, in fact, it’s the same knot mirrored!
The video tutorial by Masha Knots is the best I could find. It’s all very well explained.
If you are not familiar with her channel, you should definitely check it out. It has A LOT of information on friendship bracelets, from the easiest to some absolutely INSANE creations. If you are new to bracelet making, you should totally start with her Beginner’s Guide video. It’s 26 minutes long but it’s definitely worth it. Very comprehensive. It was eye opening for me.
I can’t wait to try the Alpha bracelets! And this Christmas stripe is just amazing! I don’t know if I’ll be able to understand the patterns though…
For now, I’ll enjoy my four little creations… Certainly more modest, but made with lots of love anyway 😀

Can you do this with yarn
Sure! But they will be bulkier! But you can practice with yarn. 🤗
What can I use to make these bracelets?
Hi Jacqueline. You can use many materials. In my opinion they look best if you use the kind of embroidery floss you would use for cross stitch, for instance. But you can also use cotton or other thin yarns. i hope this helps :-*
this really helped i loved this! keep adding braclets tho!
Is there a pattern sheet for this? (like foward not backward not)
