Cat home makeover: from cat to shark

The toughest thing when you create something from scratch is that you have too many decisions to make. Materials, shape, colours, decorations… What bothers me about decisions is that choosing something usually means discarding the rest. I always end up wondering if I’ve made the right choice. Fortunately, there is always time to change your mind… from cat to shark.

Some months ago, I went to a workshop in this fabulous shop in Barcelona to learn how to make a pet house with a wire structure and XXL crochet. I had a very nice experience and, although my hand hurt a little after 4 hours of non-stop crocheting, I was quite happy with the results. However, I kept thinking in all the possible shapes I could I’ve done, and feeling that the cat was a very easy and obvious design. I told my boyfriend some of the ideas I had discarded. He liked so much the idea of making a shark and he was so persistent with it that I had to try. So, some days ago, I decided to undo the ears and the nose and turn them into a fin. Move the eyes, add some felt teeth… and here you are.

Some weeks ago, I helped a friend making a similar house for her two cats. At first we wanted to make it look like a mouse, with ears, whiskers and everything, but we run out of fabric and we couldn’t find the same shade of gray, so… it ended up looking like a Peruvian hat! So we put a pompom and two braids and it looked perfect! And I know the cats liked it too! Total success!

    • Yeah, it’s very clever. This structure I used was made on purpose for that craft, but it’s very similar to the wire structure you can find in a lampshade of a big lamp. I guess you could use that, cutting out one of the vertical pieces so you have a bigger opening that will be the entrance. I don’t know how to explain it better, sorry! 🙂

    • Hi Monique! Thanks for your kind words. I have some instructions I cand send you. Let me find them and I’ll write you an e-mail in the following days. 🙂

      • Hi there I’m also interested in a pattern, would it be possible if you could send through one to me as well please? I’m happy to pay if you like

      • Hi Keshia, lots of thanks for your comment. Since I don’t own the pattern, because I didn’t invent it, I don’t feel comfortable sharing it in the blog. But I’ll write you a private e-mail in the following days with some instructions that will help you create your own! Thanks.

    • Hi Barbra,
Thanks for your comment. I don’t own the pattern. I made it in a workshop of a yarn shop that eventually closed… so I’m not sure you’ll be able to find the actual pattern… I’ll write you an e-mail with some instructions that I think will be useful to create your own house 🙂 thanks for stoping by my blog!

  1. I would love to get the instructions for this. I’m a huge fan of sharks and I think my pretty Callie would enjoy this very much! She’s always hiding in the weirdest things. Thank you so much for posting this and your time!

  2. Wow! This is AWESOME! I love it! ❤ Is there any way you would please email the pattern to me also? Thank you sincerely!

    • Hi Nicki, thanks so much for stopping by. I’ll send you an email with the instructions!:) i was reluctant to post them since this is something i learnt in a workshop, hence the idea is not mine, but giving the popularity, maybe i’ll change my mind! I’ll send you an e-mail later anyway!:)thanks!
